6/25/94 Nautica Stage, Cleveland, OH Opening instrumental segment standard/great,
with a VERY nice pre-Nirvana
section, though not impressively unusual for '94, imo. "Boy" at 7:19
or so.. The BMGS/WUDMTF segment is straightforward.
Tramps segment begins at 9:30. I assume there were tramps, based on
crowd reaction and the significant activity from Page &
Fish, and signals from Mike (and basically zero from Trey -- just chords).
Decent tramps segment.. Jam segment begins around
11:30, with Trey noodling melodiously. Very fragile and staccato'ed,
akin to the 6/11/94 YEM, frankly. Gentle stuff from
everyone.. light, jazzy drumming from Fish, and almost nothing from
Page and Mike, who just drop out for the most part and let
Trey solo in an almost Hood-like fashion, accompanied only lightly
by Fish... this happens frequently at the beginning of the
YEM jam segment, though not always, of course. At 13 minutes, Mike
starts getting more into the groove. At 13:30, Trey's
noodling starts sounding akin to Santana's 'Oye Como Va,' and he does
tease it around 14 mins or so, lightly. As everyone
knows, it is not uncommon for Trey to tease this song in the YEM jam
segment, but what distinguishes this from other YEM
Oye teases is that Trey is noodling marvelously around the Oye theme
but not really hitting it precisely on its head (in many
versions he just outright teases Oye Como Va). Trey's activity is,
in this manner, similar to his dancing around the FOTM theme
in the JAM out of Drowned on 12/31/95 (he never played the whole FOTM
melody in there, either). This is a gorgeous YEM,
folks. Definitely the highlight of this show, in my opinion (well,
NICU). The jam builds and builds out of the somewhat quiet
Trey noodling mode into a much more typically funky and melodious YEM
jam at 16 minutes. Trey is very active, as are the
others. Some very funky support from Mike in here, notably! The concluding
few minutes of the jam are fantastic! At 18:08,
Mike and Fish start grooving it out... Their jamming is very fiery
in here -- very active, until about 18:50, when it gets a bit more
laid back and then the closing segment starts around 19 minutes. Mike
kinda teases "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by YES in this
bass and drums jam. The vocal jam begins with all of them chanting
in unison as usual, only they are rather reserved. I cannot
make out any words. At 21:20 or so, Boom Chakachakachaka Boom chakachakachaka..
well, not really. ;^) This is your
typically silly vocal jam, but nothing really grabs me in here (click
clacking mouth noises at 22:40 or so, though.. kinda
interesting, I suppose, maybe, to some people..). Very quick paced
vocal jamming at 23 mins (the opening was much slower)
but at 24:15 or so, they just chant and hmmmm.. sounds like Kung could
enter into the picture in here. But, no. Just fades out.
Total time 24:57. Vocal jam wasn't special in my opinion. Run of the
mill 1994 fare. But the jam contained some fantastic,
harmonious, active soloing from Trey, and had a very strong ending.
A truly awesome YEM. B+ rating. two cents dirk420
