6/18/94 UIC Pavilion, Chicago, IL Excellent, glorious cDSBDs of this
show are available. There's a great and obvious Mind
Left Body Jam in the opening hi-hat-intro of the amazing Bowie, too
(and if you can't hear that, you _really_ are deaf! ;).
Opening standard. Mike, it sounds like, teases "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
several times in this pre-Nirvana section, before
dropping it around 1:50. Very gorgeous pre-Nirvana, and the Vibration
of Life does sound like it was legitimately attempted
(briefly) around 2 minutes or so. Very eeeeerily enchanting segment.
Nirvana at 3:48, and it is delightful, with exceptionally
Grand Page.. Mike's solo section at 4:31 begins very melodiously and
slowly, but gets somewhat quizzical and awry and kinda
(deliberately) falls to pieces, seguing nicely into the pre-charge
segment (when the trampolines are brought out, much to the
amusement of non-jaded attendees in the audience). Really excellent
fret-work from Trey in the pre-charge.. the first shot at the
Note at 5:52 is awesome, and Trey's jamming around it is awesome in
kind. Trey gets off reasonably decent sustain on the
second shot at the Note.. not as good as it could have been, though.
"Boy" at 7:12 after a strong scream from Trey, with 'Man'
and 'God' and 'Shit' also belted out with force (well, 'shit' not as
much). Very upbeat WUDMTF segment, with reasonably
decent fills from everyone, and some cute stuff from Trey before the
tramps segment begins at 9:22 or so. Page doodles
repetitively at first.. signals from Mike. Page is still fairly reserved
(especially in light of 6/11/94), but he nevertheless noodles
melodiously, teasing Frankenstein around 10:30. Still, not much of
a climax before, at 10:55 or so, Trey immediately begins the
jam segment kicking out "How Many More Times" (Zepplin), before noodling
melodiously in typically YEM jam segment
fashion. Ooooouuu.. some nice spacey sustain (and a lil cut in here!).
Around 11:40 Trey almost teases THAT THEME of the
6/11/94 YEM!!! (never noticed this before! =^) But he drops it quick
and starts noodling repetitively... no theme particularly.
Great accompaniment from Fish (almost nothing in here from Mike and
Page). Still rather quiet.. mostly Fish and Trey around
12:30.. until 12:38 when everyone explodes back into a great YEM jam,
in which Trey starts darkly chording as if to break out
into a Zepplinesque frenzy again. Mike's accompaniment is especially
funky and engaging in here (13:10).. very repetitive
material from Trey until 13:20 or so when he breaks out soloing more
mellifluously. Very nice.. just great soloing from Trey,
with fantastic, active, forceful accompaniment from the others!! =^]
(14:30) Just another SWEEEET June 1994 YEM jam
segment, that climaxes spectacularly in a most Santana-esque fashion
(Landlady teases from Page around 14:50)!!!! B&D at
14:57, just Mike and Fish funking it out.. Mike's fairly low-key until
around 15:30 or so.. but he doesn't really RAGE in here..
just funks along with Fish steadily and somewhat melodiously.. Closing
WUDMTF segment at 16:08 with vocal fills.. vocal jam
begins at 16:25, with wretched breathy noises and staccato-screams
at first.. Weird! ;) And some AAAH and dog-like noises..
Fish or someone starts up a jam that sounds like the SPAMMETY SPAM
SONG!!! But instead of "Spam wonderful Spam"
Trey appears to be singing something else.. NO!!! THE WONDERFUL WIZARD
OF SPAM!!!! =^] It's the SPAM
VOCAL JAM!!!! =^] =^] =^] Absolut Spam around 18 minutes.. (see Monty
Python's SPAM song for more info). The
SPAM JAM dies out within a minute or so, and dissolves into harmonizing
vocal weirdness, as one would expect from a 1994
vocal jam.. around 20:15 Trey appears to sing something, but I can't
make it out.. 'direction of Albuquerque' or something..I
can't say I know this little tune. Total time 21:05. Chalk Dust begins
a second later. Well, I thought this was a fantastic, exciting,
well above-average version of YEM. Check it out if you can. A- rating.
