From: Gregory SollSubject: 4-28-96 Jimmy's in Uptown New Orleans If you have been in New Orleans recently . . .if you keep up with the music scene. . . then you may have been at Jimmy's on Sunday Night to see Michael Ray and his Cosmic Crew. . .and you may have been hoping that maybe members of Phish might show up. . .Well! They did! When Michael Ray and his band took the stage, Trey and Paige made their way through the front door of the bar and walked through the crowd and onto the stage. . . What followed? . . . about 500 people witnessed a New Orleans style, steam bath FUNK FEST!!!! The show featured alot of funk, fusion jazz, vocal jazz. . . Michael Ray is a disciple of Sun Ra and his influence (Sun Ra's) in this type of music is the most prevelent, but there were heavy hints of Parliament Funkadelic, Miles Davis, and the local Brass Band sounds that are played live in New Orleans every day of the week. . . Trey was gracious . . . a true gentleman whom stood in the back, out of the spotlight, and was in deep concentration. . . He seemed honored to be performing with such spirited musicians. . . His solos were anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes long and he did about 10 to 12 of them during the three hour show. . .but, the real magic of the show was Michael Ray's band. . . with or without members of Phish, Michael Ray is a must . . .A music event that actually takes you somewhere. . .and Trey was outstanding. . .he held back alot out of respect for the other musicians, but when he took the lead, he blew the roof of the joint!!! Jimmy's is small . . . so my tape came out great, but there were only about 3 or 4 other people recording the show, so good luck . . .
