There's an extra opening verse in this very upbeat MikeS
(about how this is _Mike's Song_). This is a very
non-serious version in which Mike yells "MY SONG!!" at one
point before the tramps jam segment. This version is very
light and whimsical in the opening, and when the jam
segment kicks in around 2:45 it takes on a much more funky
and dark feel (with a lot of nice fills from Page and Mike
in particular). Trey jams during this segment, leaving
the off-key sustain crap to other versions, well, until
5:15 or so, when the jam gets caught in a spooky, eerie
rut that plods along. A good MikeS, but not a favorite of
mine (it might be one of your favorites, though.. this is
without question an unusual version). Hydrogen doesn't
kick in until 7:35 or so, and it is really beautiful, with
Trey tooling around a little before he begins the theme.
What a great tune..
Weekapaug kicks in at 10:31, and Mike's opening solo is
snappy and tight with a happy-go-lucky flavor (I've heard
him do alot better..). Page is really out front on the
keys, pounding away at the beginning of this Week. By 13,
Trey spirals along on the 'doc, with amazing accompaniment
from Everyone. Like 4/19/92, this is similarly very
melodic and enchanting. It doesn't slow down smoothly,
though, and sounds a little fudged (Trey) around 15 (I got
the impression that he ran out of ideas for this jam..).
Around 15:45 the jam climbs steadily out of a slow mode,
with solid fills from the boys. By 17, this steady jam is
ALMOST peaking! The Week finale jam explodes into the
picture at 17:18 or so, and is solid but, unfortunately,
not as impressive as it could be. A really good
MikeSGroove, in general, though. 18 minutes total time!
6.5 rating.. (B-/C+) I recommend this show, too, which has
Popper on a few, including a great Possum. This show also
has the first Lifeboy I'd ever heard, and it still brings
chills to my spine when I hear it (especially at the
beginning, when Trey plays the first four notes before
actually launching the song.. don't ask me why this makes
me cream..). Noel Redding plays bass on the Fire, and
Mike allegedly plays keys for it (they start out with Mike
on bass for the Fire, but pretend like he can't play it,
so Trey invites Noel to come on stage..).
