Hey there
This Ghost is currently my favorite. (Thanks Allison) Mostly because
it is
the one I most recently listened to out of MY top three (Atlanta, Starlake,
A-Dam). I have yet to hear 7/3 (Nurnberg) hopefully that will change
soon
(right Allison?) so the top three may soon have a new member. Creg
the tape
for the 6/24/97 Ghost set is on its way to you, thanks. That leaves
me with
just 7/10 that is MIA. Anybody out there have the 7/10 Ghost? With
that out
of the way let's get to it.
Ghost Story #10--Paradiso, Amsterdam, Netherlands 7/1/97 Set 1
The Ghost of Uncle John Riding Carini's Worm
This Ghost open's the first of a two night stand in Amsterdam, and what
a
way to get started. The prologue starts off in typical fashion
at (0:00)
after no detectable count off. The lyrics are as usual without
error with
one slight exception. The first of the Ghost!! shrieks is a beat or
two
early. The verse break is somewhat extended and really is carried by
Fishman
this time around. Not really funky but I could dance to it. The
prologue
comes to a close as is typical around (3:00) with a very reserved yet
squealing Ghost!! What could cause this mixed feeling of caution
and
surprise?? not one but TWO ghosts in this story and a VERRRRRY BIG
WORM....a
Red, Red, Worm.
The first 3 minutes or so are also pretty laid back in a lazy porno
funky
type of way. This isn't a blind with passion, hammer nails with
your most
useful appendage type of porno-funk, this is a lazy mellow groove summer
time afternoon riding the canals in one of those glass roofed boats
kind of
porno-funk. A secretive embrace in the back seat visible only to those
standing on the bridge above. Gradually the tempo and the passion pick
up
and by (6:55) this is full on wall of noise funk-explosion, Trey is
growling
and molten and this Ghost Story is just RAGING at this point. At (7:46)
the
secret is out, Do you know where you are???....You're on the
Back of the
Worm!!!. This chant ends around 8:13 with an ecstatic scream from Fish???
This full nut blowing jam reminded me for a second or two maybe four
of the
Albany YEM. (9:15) the tempo changes the jam begins to metamorphose.
It is
somewhat cacophonous and dissonant. Trey picks up on a ring my bell
type
boogie which is short lived devolving into random scratches. Page brings
down the mothership (UFO noises) and gets down with some kickass honky-tonk
piano playing. (10:24) the back of the worm chant rears it's head again
for
5 or 6 seconds...and who is riding on this Worm? None other than Uncle
John
himself. By 10:34 or so this is UNQUESTIONABLY....those of you who
do not
hear this are DEAF....an Uncle John's Band>Playing segue Jam
Tease....listen
to ANY UJB>Playin you can.... then listen to this Ghost...it Reeks
of Uncle
John....Trey drops in and out of this Jam while everybody else is playin
in
the band for all they are worth....around (12:05) Trey starts dancing
around
with Uncle John's Box of Rain...This madness continues for another
two
minutes...in and out and off and on UJB and Box of Rain at THE SAME
TIME....is it only me that hears this...have I lost my mind?
(14:28) the
mothership returns and whisks uncle John away. His pained cries
can be
heard through a tempo change as the owner of the worm arrives on the
scene.
The 16:31 mark finds still another time change and the man with the
lump
rises from the floor boards. Trey starts out this Carini Jam while
every
body else is still holding on to the memory of uncle john's jam. By
17:09
mike and fish have picked up on the Carini groove but have not quite
found
their appropriate holes. By 18:10 Page has taken the lead and is in
the
Carini groove. At 18:30 the mothership takes a last fly by. The beat
starts
to drop a solid outro for this Ghost story highlighting the boys in
the
rhythm section. The Ghost Story comes to a close at the 20:19 marks
with a
stop on a dime.
If you haven't heard this Ghost.....PLEASE DO....If you have...listen
to it
again....you KNOW where you are....You're on the back of the WORM.
Who you gonna call
Marty
